I believe the person I live with for the past 5 years is a procrastinator. I thought up until very recently that it was just a chronic depression and a friend told me about procrastination. I and the person I live with checked the definition online and we both agreed that it really seems to be the problem. The chronic depression and the different fears (fears of others, fear of going outside alone, double checking everything) are just a concequence of the procrastination.
It is getting harder and harder for me. Even if I know that what she does is because of her education that made her a procrastinator, it is really hard for me. Being with someone is suppose to make outside problem easier to face. But in my case, I have the problems of 2 people and I have to handle it on my own.
Sometimes, when we have a fight, I just want to give up, quit, go away. I want a normal life. But then I remember own nice she can be, and how devastated she would be. And I love her. so what is the solution.
It is getting to me. I used to be joyful, and find myself more depressed, crying for nothing sometimes. I keep telling myself that time will makes things better, but right now, I feel that I am lying to myself.
Anyway, I saw many people writting about being a procrastinator, I am giving you the story of someone that love a procrastiator.
If anyone has any idea on what to read, how the help her, what to do.
Tomorrow is another day, I will probably feel better anyway.

Hello,

I've found The Now Habit, by Neil Fiore, to be one the most helpful books I've read on procrastination. I'd love to work through the book with a partner or two - I find that a support system makes a huge difference for me when trying for change. Would anyone be interested in having a phone support meetings for working through The Now Habit?

Thank you, and best wishes to everyone out there dealing with procrastination!

so.. i am once again fed up with myself, and how badly i procrastinate. i've decided to get back into using my planner so that i can remember the thigns that i want to do. i am also trying to tackle the things that cause me to procrastinate in the first place.

one week down, and i think i'm doing pretty well. i've used my to-do list every day. i love adding a little check mark when i've completed something.
i read an article last week about procrastination where they said that one thing you can do is say that you "want to" do a task instead of "have to". apparently saying have to creates a feeling of dread that you may rebel against. i had a hard time convincing myself that i wanted to clean the litterbox. ugh. but when i really thought about it i realized that i wanted my cat to have a nice place to do her business and not be walking all over her own poo. so it made the job a little easier. i was also pleased to discover that it didn't take forever like i imagined it would. i was done in about 10 min. wow. that's another plus!

ok.. as we speak i am typing this as a distraction from work. so i need to stop procrasinating!!! :P

Hi everyone! I happen to be a non-procrastinator (most of the time) but I am looking for some help for my older brother. He finished high school and began going to a nearby community college but failed most of his classes and decided to drop out after the first semester. He spent majority of the year working on recording and producing music in his music studio and decided to apply to a music school (also nearby). He sent in his demo and is waiting for a reply in about a week. I was talking to him today and he said to me that he no longer cared about anything and he was too lazy. He no longer wants to go to this music school and I am worried he won't try hard if he gets in. My mom and I spent majority of the evening talking some sense into him and I came to the obvious conclusion that he most likely has a form of depression that is causing his laziness. Do you think I am right about depression or do you think he truly is suffering from a severe form of procrastination? I thought you guys would know a lot more about this than me.
Thanks,

I have tried maybe two dozen types of lists, time management techniques, rewards, incentives, etc. and can't seem to get any one to work more than, say, ONCE!!! Does anyone have any tips for slaying the anxiety/procratination beast? Even if it only lasted a month or a week for you, that would be an improvement over my success rate to date!!!

Thanks,

Hi, I'm new to this board but not to procrastination. Trying really hard in various ways to consistently address it as I see it as a major source of unhappiness in my life. I think it's the case that I procrastinate on anything I think I "should" do and anything that I find overwhelming/anxiety provoking. I have found that when I consciously remind myself that the thing I "should" do is actually something that I have chosen/am choosing to do, it really helps. And if, for the overwhelming task, I identify the very next physical action (a la David Allen & Getting Things Done), it makes it much easier for me to do that thing and then to do the next little piece, etc. However, I do not implement these strategies consistently. In fact, I'll procrastinate for days (as I did for the last five) before trying these strategies. Sometimes I don't think of them. Sometimes I do think of them but just will not do them. Anyone have any suggestions (other than just forcing yourself to do it-which I know is obvious but somehow doesn't seem to work with me) for consistently implementing helpful strategies?
Many thanks,
Mollie

So...the New Year is nearing...

We all know how that is with resolutions. Mostly, they are only done to be broken later.

How to make it so that the chance of your resolutions coming through increases substantially?

I might be sharing some tips, maybe later on, but here comes a rebellious idea.

Don't make the new year resolutions around New Year.

Make them one week later.

That gives you one full week to use to think them out right.
(It also brings brain back to the equation, as the resolutions are usually made in emotional peak period when contact with reality is insufficient and emotions prevail.)

Hello,

My name is Chris and I am one of the developers of Allontheball.

Fundamentally I must admit that I am a lazy person but as I have quite a demanding job (I manage a service organization in an international software company), I was constantly becoming stressed out by all the various small tasks that needed to be done.

Over the years, I tried at least 15 to 20 different types of planner and organizer software and I concluded three things:

1. They were all pretty similiar.
2. They focus too much on categories and too little on the time aspect.
3. They were all too slow to use with too many fields and windows.

Anyway, one fine autumn in 2004, i sat down and took the first brave step of designing my own time management tool and I decided to call it Allontheball.

Fundamentally, it has a number of features that really sets it aside from any other time management software I know of.

1. First of all, Allontheball is very fast to use. If you for instance are on the phone or working with your emails, you can "throw" in a new task without even opening a single window.

2. Secondly, Allontheball is almost like a calendar for tasks. Each day is divided into four periods (morning, mid-day, afternoon and evening). So if I want to add a task "Follow up on that problem xyz", I can place it on for instance Friday Morning. That way it is not in my face until I need to see it.

3. Thirdly, Allontheball is very very forgiving and its written for the "real world". In the example in point 2 above, what if I don't manage to get around to doing that task on Friday morning? No worries, Allontheball will automatically move the task to Mid-day for you. In other words, you will NEVER loose a task.

4. Finally, Allontheball is a bit fun. Each time you perform a task you get points. It's not an important part of the tool but just a little thing to give you some feedback on how you are doing throughout the day.

Allontheball is based on Donations. You can try it out and if you like it you pay us as much as it is worth to you.

If you would like to take it for a test drive on:

Kind Regards,

Chris

New time management Holiday | Is Now Your Time?
Join me on a working holiday.

I’ve been slaving away on writing projects for the past few months whilst touring Thailand (oh the hardships). But 3 days ago I hit a personal crisis. And it has led me to invite you on a ‘virtual holiday’ to Thailand. Let me explain.
The trip will be dedicated to time management.

Here’s the short version:

How to balance work with rest
How to develop the physical and emotional energy to sustain your self for successful time management
What you should do morning till night to maintain a fast pace focus on the things you want and need to do
The precise way to prioritize activities so you get everything done
And 30 days more material…

Reply to me (contact Nathan via http://www.nathanshaw.name/contact/) if you want details on how you can come virtually via the Internet for a 30 day time management Holiday. Or first you can read below if you want the colourful description of how this came about…

I am going to a tropical paradise. A beautiful diving island with clear waters, coral and tropical sea creatures.

The activities I will be doing include physical health; me ntal and intellectual development, and business-like time-management. I’ll show you a list of the activities later but here’s the important thing for you…

I’ve got my holiday activities organized with no problem. But there is a vast difference between being organized for success, and actually doing everything we are organized for to maximize our productivity, satisfaction, and fun.

Little demons attack us. They steal our energy, our mindfulness, our motivation. They distract us, and leave us procrastinating, unclear of priorities, with limited ti me , etc. Much of the time we don’t even relaize those demons are draining us of productivity.

I am ashamed to say that for the last 4 days, whilst watching the Middle East news coverage, I have been sucked into watching way too much TV. (And I bla me the demons of course).

Whilst being so organized with my life that I can easily spend the tim e doing whatever I want, watching TV is just NOT what I want. Yet I found myself sitting infront of the idiot box for a few hours a day - 4 days in a row.

Well it got me depressed. I had a restless night. Tossing and turning in bed. So I got up. Standing on the 19th floor apartment balcony, I watched Bangkok cities twinkling lights… asking myself what motivated me to waste my time. I realized that because my life right now is so efficient and organized, I’ve beco me lazy!

“Work has a habit of filling the ti me available to it”
I do feel ‘busy’, I have been working atleast 10 hours a day. But it’s almost an excuse for not doing as much as I know I can. I’m procrastinating on my life’s passions and the adventures and success I can have. Why?

It’s fascinating for me that I would sacrifice doing the things I love, for something such as watching TV which puts me in a low state, and leaves me feeling bored, empty and in a bad mood.

I felt lazy and unproductive. That’s the most personally hurtful thing I experience.

Standing on that balcony at 3am I thought of some places I could be for fun instead of infront of my apartment T V. I could be at a Salsa dancing class which I keep meaning to do, at Ocean World Aquarium, shopping at the famous Bangkok Siam Paragon, in a Thai Karaoke den with friends, meditating, reading, walking and talking under moon light with someone beautiful. Or doing what I love most… working on my writing, internet and seminar projects.

So I realized what I must do. And I want you to benefit from it too Nathan.

I’ve decided to take a 30 day trip to push back the evil demons of procrastination and take back control of my time.

Together we’re going to squash the procrastination demon, the low energy demon, the how to prioritize demon, and all the rest. I will give you my time management Lattice (the strategy I teach my clients for time management).

And I will share with you my 30 day deep psychological investigation into WHY procrastination occurs.

If you would like to take part in my working month holiday and not only learn, but actually apply my time management strategy that I will be focusing on, refining, and helping you with, then reply to me right now and ask for the time management Holiday details.

I hope to be ready for the trip in about 2 weeks. So our month together will start soon.

Why don't you do what you say you want to do?

It is a question I posed in my own discussion forum.

I had a few replies but I think most people procrastinate on identifying the reasons for their procrastination.

So how about anyone here on this forum explicity for procrastination?

Why oh why, do you feel/think, that you do NOT do, what you SAY you want to do...?

I think my own reason boils down to an immaturity of wanting affectionate love.

Let me explain a little.

I am a man. A man's happiest place is in the arms of his dream woman. A nurturing tender security zone.

Being productive demands high energy, vitality, concentration, speed, etc. All things not applicable to that woozy relaxation lying in the arms of the one who holds you so.

So I think my procrastination results from me wanting to find that experience even when not in those arms. I think that's the indulgence of TV. Lolling their on the cozy couch, watching something that takes you away from thoughts of the day.

A woman replacement. TV... the idiot box.

So that's a bit about why I don't do the things I say I want to do... how about you?
